Zakat al-fitr
Zakat al-fitr is a fixed charity per person, given at the end of Ramadan. Its value is based on one sa', a traditional measure of staple food, so bodies set a cash figure each year from local food prices. For 2026 the Fiqh Council of North America recommends $10 and Diyanet in Turkey set 240 TL, as reported in the Turkish press. We did not find a 2026 figure published by the National Zakat Foundation, so for pounds the calculator asks for your mosque's amount.
Who you pay for, such as children and other dependants, is a question of family responsibility on which the schools differ in detail. Enter the number of people you are paying for, and ask your imam if you are unsure.
Fidya
Fidya is for someone who cannot fast and will never be able to make up the missed fasts, for example because of a long-term illness. If you will be able to fast later, you make the fasts up instead. The National Zakat Foundation sets fidya at £7 per missed fast, the cost of one meal for one person. The Fiqh Council of North America recommends $15 per missed fast for 2026, based on the average cost of a day's food.
Kaffarah
Kaffarah applies to a fast broken without a valid reason. According to the National Zakat Foundation, the person must first try to fast 60 days in a row. If they cannot, they feed 60 people for each fast broken, which it sets at £420 per fast at £7 a meal. The calculator multiplies the fasts broken by 60 meals.
Check your local figure
These amounts change every year and differ by country because food prices differ. Where your mosque or national body publishes a figure, use theirs: type it into the amount box and the total updates.
