Zakat on silver

Silver is zakatable in any form at 2.5% of its value. Silver also sets the lower of the two nisab thresholds: the value of 612.36 g of silver (National Zakat Foundation) or about 595 g (Zaytuna College).

Two jobs for silver

Silver matters twice in zakat. Silver you own is counted at its value like gold. Separately, the price of silver sets the silver nisab, the threshold most people use, because it is far lower than the gold one.

Why the silver nisab is lower

The nisab was set as 20 gold dinars or 200 silver dirhams. At the time, gold was worth about ten times as much as silver; today gold is worth many times more than that, so the silver threshold is now much smaller. Zaytuna College treats both standards as valid and calls silver the safer approach.

Which weight

Bodies convert 200 dirhams slightly differently: 612.36 g (National Zakat Foundation), about 595 g (Zaytuna College), and 561.2 g as cited from Diyanet's handbook. The calculator shows which one it used.

Silver jewellery

The schools treat silver jewellery the same way as gold: the Hanafi school counts it worn or stored, and the other schools do not count silver jewellery worn for personal use (National Zakat Foundation).

Worked example: 2 kg of silver coins, nothing else

Silver£2,500.00
Zakatable wealth£2,500.00
Zakat (2.5%)£62.50

2,000 g × £1.25 = £2,500, above the silver nisab of £765.45. Prices: gold £90.80/g, silver £1.25/g (National Zakat Foundation nisab page, 17 October 2026); silver nisab £765.45 (612.36 g).
